The EMITS system was built for a large, multi-national, speciality metals company, in order to track enquiries.
Due to the nature of the work carried out by the company, and the many locations of their offices and production plants, the system involved a significant number of business rules, which were to be built into the software in order to make the data entry process as simple but intelligent as possible, providing users with instant feedback on enquiries that could not be made, or directing the user as to which depot the order would have to be made.
The project began with a number of requirements capture sessions to nail down the exact rules the system should follow. These sessions were followed up with frequent review sessions to ensure the project was developing exactly as the client wanted. To ensure the business rules were being adhered to and that the system was not too constrictive, the review sessions included not just members of the project management team, but also end users.
As the system would be used as a decision making tool, a large proportion of the complete system would involve reporting. Reporting Services hooked onto the database and a number of complex OLAP cubes were utilised to create some very powerful reporting tools.
The EMITS application is a browser based solution, run on the company’s own intranet. It was developed in ASP.NET (Framework 2.0) and has a SQL Server database. Reports were created in Reporting Services with additional external reports written to Excel for analysis, utilising cubes.
